Shoulder Impingement

Shoulder Impingement Syndrome

Shoulder impingement is a common condition that usually causes pain when lifting the arm above 90 degrees. If left untreated, this can lead to frozen shoulder, which is much more difficult to manage. Shoulder Impingement Syndrome is a persistent pain and can affect everyday activities, there may be pain when reaching up overhead or behind to put a coat or blouse on for example.

What causes shoulder impingement?

Shoulder Impingement  occurs when the space between the shoulder joint (subacromial space) and the upper arm bone (humerus) becomes smaller, causing the tendons which pass through this space to rub against surrounding structures, resulting in severe pain.

Repeated activity of the shoulder such as; throwing, swimming, painting, golf and tennis, will all increase the risk of shoulder impingement syndrome. Other causes include:

  • They play a sport involving overhead movements
  • Pervious injury, such as a fall, where the shoulder gets compressed
  • Bony abnormalities of the shoulder joint
  • Osteoarthrosis within the shoulder
  • Thickening of the ligaments and surrounding tissues
  • Poor shoulder muscle strength

What are the symptoms?

  • Difficulty reaching behind the back
  • Pain on overhead use of the arm
  • Weakness and loss of strength of shoulder muscles
  • In severe causes, Rotator cuff muscle tears
  • Pain with sleeping on affect side

How can Shoulder Impingement be diagnosed?

Our sports therapist will perform an examination and will take a detailed history about the condition, some tests will aim to replicate the pain and symptoms you are experiencing. The therapist will check for muscle imbalance, weakness, abnormalities and use special tests which will confirm or deny a true shoulder impingement syndrome.
